Israel welcomed 70,000 new immigrants in 2022

Rita Quartel - 28 December 2022

This year, as many as 70,000 Jews from around the world settled in Israel. That is the highest number since 1999, and more than double compared to 2021. Last year, 28,600 new immigrants came to Israel. The increase is mainly related to the war in Ukraine, which caused many Jews from both Ukraine (14,680) and Russia (37,364) to decide to leave for Israel.

The olim (the Hebrew word for Jewish immigrants) came from 95 countries. In addition to Russia and Ukraine, many Jews came from France (2,049), Belarus (1,993) and Ethiopia (1,498). These figures are updated through 1 December, so the numbers for all of 2022 are even higher.

The numbers were announced by The Jewish Agency, an organization responsible for Aliyah, as the immigration of Jews to Israel is called.

Christians for Israel’s long-standing cooperation with The Jewish Agency was intensified last year because of the situation in Ukraine. Christians for Israel’s local team there set up a large-scale evacuation plan for Ukrainian Jews, bringing thousands of them to the airports in Bucharest (Romania) and Kishenov (Moldova).

In the video below, Danielle Mor (The Jewish Agency) thanks the supporters of Christians for Israel for their contribution to one of the first evacuation flights for Jews from Ukraine last spring.
