Terrible disaster in Israel during Lag B’Omer

We are deeply shocked and saddened to learn about that a religious festival in northern Israel resulted in many casualties. At least 45 people were crushed to death and more than 150 people hurt, including many in critical condition, in a stampede after midnight Thursday at a mass gathering to celebrate the Lag B’Omer holiday at Mount Meron.This is the worst civilian disaster in Israel in peace time modern history. It is the greatest disaster that has struck Israel in peacetime.

To all who have lost loved ones, we offer our condolences for their loss. We pray for comfort for those who mourn and for recovery for all who are injured.

We are reminded of the words from Psalm 130:

Out of the depths I cry to you, Lord;
    Lord, hear my voice.
Let your ears be attentive
    to my cry for mercy. (…)

Israel, put your hope in the Lord,
    for with the Lord is unfailing love
    and with him is full redemption.
